His performances gained widespread acclaim. It might be hard to believe that the pest can be trained at all, considering their minute size and simple nervous system. However, the truth is slightly different. They aren't so much trained as they are harnessed or rigged to appear as if they're performing tasks. 

A traditional operator, or "professor" as they were often called, would attach a tiny, thin piece of gold wire around the bugs neck, which acted as a kind of leash. This was attached to the props, so when the flea jumped or moved, it would appear to interact with the items. However, the life span of a performer is quite short, with most surviving just a few months to a year under perfect conditions. This constant need for replacement performers was a challenge for circus operators. 

While the golden age of circuses was in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the trend began to fade by the 1960s. However, there has been a recent resurgence of interest in these quirky performances, thanks to vintage and nostalgia enthusiasts. Many modern flea circuses now operate without real fleas, turning to mechanical or magnetic figures to imitate the illusion of a performance. This evolution is primarily due to the challenge of maintaining live fleas and changing societal attitudes towards the treatment of animals, no matter how small. The world's longest-running, Maria Fernanda Cardoso’s “Circus of the Fleas,” showcases these modern methods. It has been in operation for over 25 years and uses digital technology to simulate the performances once given by real fleas.
