Two types account for most of what Fresno homeowners find: the German cockroach and the American cockroach. The German Cockroach
The German cockroach is small, usually about half an inch long, and light brown, with two dark stripes running behind its head. This is the species most likely to create a true indoor infestation. German cockroaches live and breed inside, favoring warm and humid rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms, and they hide behind appliances, inside cabinets, and in cracks near food and water.
What makes them difficult is how fast they reproduce. A single female and her offspring can produce hundreds of cockroaches over a few months. Because they stay indoors and multiply quickly, German cockroach problems rarely clear up on their own, and they tend to return after store-bought sprays knock down only the roaches in plain sight. Indoors, cockroaches also spread bacteria across surfaces and can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, so a growing German cockroach population is a health concern and not only a nuisance.
The American Cockroach
The American cockroach is much larger, often an inch and a half to two inches long, and reddish-brown. Some people in the area call it a water bug or palmetto bug. Unlike the German cockroach, it prefers to live outdoors and in damp, dark spaces such as sewers, drains, garages, and crawl spaces. It moves indoors when conditions outside turn too hot or dry, or when it follows plumbing lines into a building.
American cockroaches do not usually breed indoors in the numbers German cockroaches reach, but their size and habit of turning up in kitchens and bathrooms make them alarming. Repeated sightings often point to a moisture problem or an entry route that needs attention.
Telling Them Apart at a Glance

- Size: German roaches are small; American roaches are large
- Color: German roaches are light brown with two stripes; American roaches are reddish-brown
- Location: German roaches stay indoors; American roaches come in from drains, garages, and outside
