Bed Bug Exterminator

Blood-sucking creatures have fascinated humans for hundreds of years. The modern version of vampires started appearing more frequently in novels in the 18th century, but tales about them flourished even earlier than that. Superstition about blood-suckers was rampant in the Middle Ages, and the Egyptians had tales about their own version of the evil creatures. The idea of a beast feasting on human blood didn’t appear out of nowhere. Scientists have found that bed bugs have plagued the Earth for as long as 115 million years. That means for the entire 300,000 years homo sapiens have existed, bed bugs have been a nuisance in their lives.

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects named for their tendency to spend time near beds so that they can feed on people as they sleep. They’re fantastic hiders, squeezing between the smallest cracks and crevices, often within nightstands or the bedframe itself. Many go completely undetected, and the only thing that gives them away is the tiny black specks of fecal matter they leave behind. People may suspect they have an infestation because of the bite marks the bugs leave behind, but those are often ignored because they are written off as mosquito bites.

Like fleas, lice, and mosquitoes, bed bugs’ saliva has an anesthetic that keeps people from feeling the initial bite and an anti-coagulant that keeps blood flowing. People first notice they’ve been bitten afterward because of the small red welts the bugs leave behind, which often itch and can be slightly painful. Some people don’t develop any sort of marking from the bite, making the bugs’ presence even more difficult to pinpoint.

If there’s a do-it-yourself project to avoid, it’s DIY treatment for a bed bug infestation. One of the ways professionals get rid of an infestation is by heating the house with special equipment. Some people have tried to heat their space themselves, but bed bugs can survive in temperatures as high as 113°F. In 2017, within two weeks, two homes burned down due to homemade heat treatments.

They also live for a year, so trying to wait things out, hoping they die off is simply not an option. Their long life is part of what makes infestations so difficult to overcome. Professional heat treatment, chemical treatment, or fumigation are your best options for bed bugs.
