Tick Exterminator

In the midst of the countless challenges that homeowners encounter, one frequently overlooked threat lurks in our yards, playgrounds, and hiking trails. It's very tiny, yet it can bring considerable hardship and distress. We are referring, of course, to ticks. At Pestman Pest Control, we have the expertise and dedication to help you tackle this issue head-on.

Ticks are not merely nuisances; they are potential transmitters of several serious diseases. In the United States alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported an astonishing 20,000 reported confirmed cases of Lyme disease annually, a condition predominantly transmitted by ticks. These are not numbers to be ignored, and understanding the different types common to our region is an essential part of proactive pest control.

Here in Tulare and Kings County, California, we primarily encounter three types. The Western Blacklegged, the American Dog, and the Brown Dog are the main culprits, each with unique characteristics and behaviors.

The Western Blacklegged, known scientifically as Ixodes pacificus, is infamous for transmitting Lyme disease. Adults tend to prefer deer as hosts, while the younger ones feed on rodents and other small mammals. Despite their preference for woodland habitats, they're not limited to these areas and can be found in suburban environments.

The American Dog, or Dermacentor variabilis, can be found almost everywhere in North America. While this species is not a transmitter of Lyme disease, it can carry Tularemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They are named "Dog Ticks" because they often choose dogs as their host, but they will readily bite humans if given the opportunity.

Lastly, the Brown Dog, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is unique in that it can complete its entire life cycle indoors. It is less likely to transmit diseases to humans than the other two species, but it can be a significant problem for our canine companions, transmitting diseases like Canine ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis.

Here's a lesser-known fact about ticks that might surprise you: they don't die off in the winter like some other pests. Instead, they become less active and wait for the warmer months to return. This means that year-round vigilance is essential in keeping your property tick-free.

Ticks pose a significant problem because they can be carriers of various diseases that affect both humans and pets. For instance, Lyme disease, which we mentioned earlier, can lead to symptoms like fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash. If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Rocky Mountain spotted fever, another tick-borne illness, can cause high fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and muscle pain.

Effective pest control is crucial in preventing these diseases and maintaining a comfortable and worry-free home environment. This is where our dedicated team at Pestman Pest Control comes into the picture. We understand ticks, their behavior, and most importantly, the best strategies to keep them at bay.
